The Biggest Automatic Merit Awards in America (From the Colleges' Own Grids)
Rankings of "biggest scholarships" usually mix competitions, full-tuition marketing, and aggregator estimates into one list. This list is narrower and, for planning purposes, more useful: the largest guaranteed automatic awards published on colleges' own merit grids, recorded with their conditions and verified 2026-11-02. Guaranteed automatic means the college's own language commits to the amount when a student meets the published row. If an award is not in that class, it is not in this table — it is in the clearly separated section below it.
The largest guaranteed automatic awards
| College | Award | Per year | Four-year total | Published conditions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grinnell College | Iowa Dean's Scholarship | $50,000 | $200,000 | Iowa residents; GPA 4.0, weighted GPA in core academic classes |
| Centre College | Kentucky Governor's Scholars Program Scholarship | $37,500 | $150,000 | Completion of Kentucky's Governor's Scholars Program; no GPA or test threshold published for this award |
| Principia College | Chairman Scholarship | $34,800 | $139,200 | GPA 3.75 |
| Agnes Scott College | Agnes Scott $100K+ Promise (top tier) | $34,000 | $136,000 | GPA 4.0, weighted GPA on the official transcript |
| Linfield University | Presidential Scholarship | $32,000 | $128,000 | GPA 4.15, as published |
| University of Alabama | Presidential Scholarship | $28,000 | $112,000 | Out-of-state students; ACT 32 or SAT 1420; GPA 3.5 |
| Nebraska Wesleyan University | Board of Governors Scholarship | $28,000 | $112,000 | GPA 3.75 |
| Texas Lutheran University | Regent's Scholarship | $28,000 | $112,000 | GPA 4.6, as published — recalculated GPA in core classes only, on a 5.0 scale |
| Rockhurst University | Presidential Scholarship | $28,000 | $112,000 | GPA 4.0 |
Three honest qualifications belong with this table.
First, several of the biggest awards are restricted. The largest guaranteed award in the country, on a published grid, is open only to Iowa residents. The second-largest is open only to completers of one state's Governor's Scholars Program, and carries no GPA or test threshold at all — its condition is the program. Alabama's $28,000 tier is an out-of-state award; a resident of Alabama reads a different grid. A ranking a student cannot qualify for is trivia, not a plan.
Second, the GPA figures are as published, on each college's own basis. Linfield's 4.15 and Texas Lutheran's 4.6 are not typos — they are thresholds on weighted or recalculated scales, which is why a GPA above 4.0 can appear in a published grid. Read the basis before comparing your student's GPA to any row; the 4.0 GPA band page shows which grids a 4.0 reaches on a standard scale.
Third, big is not the same as cheap. These awards are subtracted from very different costs of attendance. A $50,000 award at Grinnell still leaves an estimated $37,688 per year against its published $87,688 cost of attendance, while Principia's $34,800 Chairman Scholarship leaves an estimated $20,700 against a $55,500 cost. Compare estimated remaining cost — published cost of attendance minus the guaranteed award — before ranking colleges by award size.
The largest automatic consideration amounts — not guaranteed
The amounts below are published on college grids, but the colleges' own language does not guarantee them. Meeting the criteria places a student in automatic consideration; the college also weighs other factors, and the final amount is set during that consideration. Do not budget around these figures.
| College | Award | Published amount per year | Published conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simpson College | Founder's Scholarship | $42,000 | GPA 4.0, seventh-semester cumulative GPA |
| Albion College | Presidential Scholarship | $42,000 | GPA 3.8 and up; Albion also weighs extracurricular involvement, leadership, and personal merit |
These are the two largest published consideration amounts in our dataset. They are larger than every guaranteed award except Grinnell's — and they are worth less for planning than a smaller guaranteed figure, because a family cannot count them before the college decides. That is the whole difference between the two tables, and it is why they are never merged here.
How to use this list
- Filter by the conditions first — residency and program restrictions remove the top of this list for most students before GPA is even considered
- Check your student's GPA, on the college's stated basis, against the 4.0 GPA band and the wider GPA hub
- Run the exact numbers in the free calculator, which applies each grid's conditions to the student's own GPA, scores, and residency
- Rank the survivors by estimated remaining cost, not by the size of the award in the headline
The biggest guaranteed award a student actually qualifies for, at a college they would actually attend, beats the biggest number on any national list. The grids make that comparison possible — provided the conditions travel with the amounts, as they do here.
